The marshlands at the southern end of the Langebaan estuary abut rich soils. The saline waters of the estuary leech the metals and minerals from the soils below which result in stunning colour displays. The erratic ebb and flow of the river and sea, causing varying water levels which in turn result in tones of colours depending on exposure, salinity and sunlight. ’’This gives a further dimension to the extraordinary forms, which I am privileged to view from relatively low levels.’’
‘’I went back repeatedly to the wetlands during the terrible winter drought of 2005. The lower river level had led to a reduced water level and an increase in salinity making the colours even more startling than I had previously experienced. This was made even more dramatic by the newly bleached recently exposed sands lending a contrast not unlike that which late winter snow lends to rocky outcrops.’’
